Tax year 2022 calendar: Important federal dates and deadlines

Filing your taxes on time and making sure you meet all required deadlines can help you avoid IRS fees and penalties. Here are the most important dates and deadlines for individuals for tax year 2022.

  • January 16, 2023 - If you’re a freelancer or business owner, your last estimated tax payments for 2022 are due.
  • January 23, 2023 - The IRS will begin accepting tax returns. 
  • January 31, 2023 - Deadline for employers to send W-2 forms. It’s also the deadline to send various 1099 forms like a 1099-NEC, 1099-K, and 1099-MISC.
  • February 15, 2023 - Deadline to file or update and refile your W-4 withholding form with your employer.
  • April 3, 2023 - If you turned 72 in 2022, your required minimum distributions are due.
  • April 18, 2023 - Federal taxes (and many state taxes) are due. This is also the deadline to file IRS form 4868 to request a filing extension. If you owe taxes, they are also due on this day, even if you request a filing extension. It’s also the deadline to contribute to your IRA or HSA for 2022. For freelancers, first quarter estimated taxes for 2023 are due.
  • June 15, 2023 - For freelancers and business owners, estimated taxes for the second quarter of 2023 are due. If you’re a US expat, your tax returns are due by this date.
  • September 15, 2023 - For freelancers and business owners, estimated taxes for the third quarter of 2023 are due.
  • October 16, 2023 - Your 2022 tax return is due if you requested an extension.
  • December 31, 2023 - Those 73 and older must take required minimum distributions.
  • January 15, 2024 - For freelancers, your fourth quarter estimated taxes for 2023 are due.
