Can I deposit my tax refund into someone else's account?

If you’re getting a tax refund, you have some options when choosing where your money goes. While you can choose to have it directly deposited into a bank account, in most cases, you must be the owner of the account.

In general, you can have your tax refund deposited into any banking account with your name on it. The only exception to this rule is if you’re married and jointly filing your taxes. In this case, you can have your tax refund deposited directly into your spouse’s account.

So, you can deposit your refund into your personal bank account, but could not have it deposited into your mother’s account or a co-worker’s account.

If you want your tax refund to go into someone else’s account, the best way is to transfer it once the money arrives in your bank account.
