How can I receive my refund if I don't have a bank account?

Modified on Wed, 24 Jan at 4:37 PM

If you are receiving a refund but don’t have a bank account for direct deposit, you can choose to receive a paper check. If you choose to receive a paper check, please allow four to six weeks after your refund has reached the “Refund Sent” stage for delivery.

The most recent details about your refund are available on the IRS’s "Where’s my Refund?" Tool and are updated daily. The tool allows you to look up the status of your return either:

  • Within 24 hours of following the e-filing of a tax return

  • At least six months after submitting a paper return

The IRS's "Where’s My Refund?" tool has a tracker that displays progress through 3 stages: (1) Return Received, (2) Refund Approved and (3) Refund Sent.

Depending on how your tax return is being processed, you will receive personalized refund information. As soon as the IRS finishes your tax return and confirms your refund, the program will provide you a precise refund date.
